Every Singaporean knows 4D and TOTO, but how much do we know about the state-owned organisation that brought us these lottery games?
Founded on 23 May 1968, Singapore Pools was established to counter illegal gambling activities and provide a safe and trusted avenue for bettors. Today, it is a world-class responsible gaming operator, and has contributed to the decline in problem gambling. It also channels its surplus back to Tote Board, a statutory board that funds worthy causes that enhance people’s lives.
The company has an extensive network of over 300 branches and authorised outlets that offer Toto, 4D and Singapore Sweep, along with sports betting on association football matches, motor racing events and horse races. It also offers a mobile app for its customers to place bets from the convenience of their home or workplace. It is the only legal bookmaker and totalisator in the country. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tote Board, a statutory board under the Ministry of Finance.
It is not uncommon to see long snaking queues at Singapore pools authorised outlets, especially during big lottery draws, such as TOTO and Toto Powerball. The queues can even extend to nearby MRT stations. But did you know that you can skip those queues by making your bets online? It is just a matter of logging into your Singapore Pools Account, which can be done through the official website or the mobile app.
Once you have logged in, you can choose your numbers through the various bet types, including QuickPick ordinary entries, and place your bets. You can also select your favourite number or teams and set a goal for your bet. The app also has a history of your past bets and allows you to keep track of your winnings. You can even use it to calculate your odds of hitting the jackpot!
Aside from allowing bettors to avoid lengthy queues, the app also allows them to access their accounts anytime, anywhere. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy to navigate, and you can find all the information you need at a glance.
The app is available for iOS and Android devices. You must be a Singapore citizen or permanent resident to use it, and must be aged 21 years or older. You must also have a valid FIN and a current e-mail address. Once you’ve registered, you can verify your FIN through a video call or at a Singapore Pools branch.
The company’s CEO, Yeo Teck Guan, recently sat down with Collective Campus to discuss change management and the COVID-19 crisis. He also shared his thoughts on the digital transformation strategy he is spearheading to shift Singapore Pools from a legacy organisation to an agile, digitally empowered business.
