The Sydney Prize for Journalism

The Sydney Prize honors the work of journalists who illuminate the great issues of our times, whether they are about the search for a basis for lasting peace, the need for better housing and medical care for all, or the battle against discrimination of all kinds. Each month a piece of journalism will be selected for its outstanding coverage of these issues, and the author of the winning entry will receive a $1,000 cash prize. The winner will be announced the second Wednesday of each month.

The Prize is named in honour of Sidney Cox ’37, who served as an important mentor to many students at Hamilton and also made a significant contribution to the arts through his patronage and his work on the Performing Arts Committee. During the year the Prize Committee sent out letters to Sidney’s friends, and contributions were very generous. As a result, about $1500 is now in hand but more is needed to establish the Fund on a solidly permanent basis.

This prize is to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies to a student who has obtained the highest mark in 12 junior units of the course. The prize is funded by a gift from the Mandelbaum Trust.

In honor of the work of Sidney Hollander, a former president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, who believed that a free press was essential to a healthy society, the Sydney Hillman Prize for Journalism was established. The prize is designed to encourage journalism that illuminates the great issues of our times, from the search for a basis for lasting peace, to the need for better housing and medical care for everyone, to the promotion of civil liberties and democracy and the fight against discrimination of all kinds. The prize is supported by the City of Sydney and other public and private donors. Nazanin Boniadi was the inaugural winner of the Sydney Peace Prize, which is presented to leading global voices who promote peace with justice. The Sydney Peace Foundation is proud to help these Laureates turn outrage into action for a more peaceful and just world. You can help them by making a donation today.
