Press Release : Timor-Leste Is 90% Prepared To Realize Asean Peoples’ Forum 2016

TIMOR-LESTE IS 90% PREPARED TO REALIZE ASEAN PEOPLES’ FORUM 2016

Dili, Timor-Leste -21-07-2016 –  In line with the event of ASEAN Peoples’ Forum, which will be held in the upcoming August in Dili, Co-Chair for the forum, Fernando “Ato” Costa affirmed that Timor-Leste as the  host is now 90% prepared to realize this regional forum through all the efforts, which it has made.

“Preparations for the 11th of the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum, until now I can say it is 90% prepared. It means that we have made all the efforts in order to make the event happen,” he said during a preparation meeting for the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum on Thursday (21/7) at the office of FONGTIL, Dili.

Ato Costa, who is the activist of RENETIL explained that the National Organizing Committee had arranged the Dili Convention Center as the place for the realization of the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum, including accomodations, such as hotels for regional participants.

“We have also ensured place of the event that it will be held at CCD. The programs, which we would like to concretize during the conference are also about to complete. We are in cooperation with all our networks either at national or regional level in order to bring our participants from South East Asia and the national participants to the forum. So, I can say that it is all about to complete,” he explained.

Regarding the presence of the heads of state from other countries in the conference, Mr. Ato Costa said the Organizing Committee was currently lobbying the Vice President of the Philipines to come to deliver his speech in the forum, it was 60% confirmed. Parliament members of ASEAN member states will also take part in the conference, but they have not yet been confirmed, he informs.

“We have sent out all the invitations. We have cordially invited the vice president of the Philipines to come to deliver his speech in this forum. According to the latest information, it is aboout 60% confirmed, although we are still in the process of lobbying,” he said.

He added that Prime Minister Timor-Leste, Rui Maria de Araujo was also confirmed to come to deliver his speech in the referred forum for having dialog with the participants.

Meanwhile, the Noble Peace Price Laurreate, Jose Ramos Horta is also confirmed to come to the solidarity night. The National Organizing Committe as well as trying to confirm the presence of the Ex-Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao in the openning ceremony of the forum.

ASEAN’s civil society conference or ASEAN Peoples’ Forum will be held in Dili, the Capital of Timor-Leste from the 2nd of August until the 5th of August, 2016. More than 800 participants will take part in the forum. According to the provisional data, the participants from ASEAN member states are about more than 400 and the national participants are about 3000.

Timor-Leste was appointed to host this civil society conference based on the resolution issued by the representatives of the civil society in November 2015. The resolution also appointed Malaysia to become co-chair for the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum to provide its support for the preparations until the end of the event.

Actually, the referred forum is held in Laos, but due to the lack of insurance and guaranty of possibility to have open and free space of constructive discussion for all issues, which have been the major concerns of the region. Therefore, Timor-Leste was given the opportunity to host the event.

ASEAN Peoples’ Forum is being also the first hiigh level meeting of ASEAN, which Timor-Leste’s civil soceity organize. During the forum, the particpants will also make a joint solidarity statement for the issue of martime border between Timor-Leste and Australia, human rights violation and other important iissues of the region.
